Scotland, undoubtedly, is one of the most beautiful countries I have ever visited. During the 5th day of our trip we went to see the Isle of Skye. We saw 4 places: Quiraing, Kilt Rock, Neist Point and Fairly Pool. Quiraing is a landslip in the north of the island. Kilt Rock is a small waterfall. Neist Point is a viewpoint in the east and the fairly pools is a set of small waterfalls. It took us the whole day to see all places. We stayed overnight in Plockton - the palm city. I read that given its specific location it has Mediterranean climate and thus it is possible to grow palms there. "Weather in Scotland is like people. Wait 10 minutes and it will change" - by bus driver in Cape Wrath It is said that in order to see the true untouched wilderness one has to go to Iceland, Canada and Scotland. I'm going to Iceland in September but in the meantime I decided to pay Scotland a visit too :-) The goal was to rent a car and do a road-trip trough the Scottish Highlands. Here are the places I have visited: I started my trip off in Edinburgh. Edinburgh, in my opinion, is the second most beautiful city in the UK after London. There is many tourists and Edinburgh it is a true international city. It is not uncommon to see Scottish men on streets wearing kilts. One gets used to it after a while. The other cool thing about the city is the fact that there is an extinct vulcano in the very centre of it. It is called Arthur's Seat and it is 251m tall. There is an actual place to sit on top of it too :-) The view from the top is really spectacular. After a day in Edinburgh we have started moving north towards the Loch Ness which was our final destination for the day. We have made a stop in Stonehaven to see Dunnattar Castle. Scotland is a land of castles and there is plenty of them there but what makes Dunnattar Castle special is the fact that it is located on a cliff. lAfter the castle we embarked on the Highland tourist route towards Loch Ness. Often times we had single track roads which, as we found later, are very common in Scotland. There are passing places for cars to pass and to overtake one another. To be honest I had bigger expectations from Loch Ness. In the end it it just a long lake :-) Originally, we planned to stay two days there but a couple of hours turned out to be enough so we decided to move further north towards Cape Wrath which is the most north westerly place in mainland Scotland. As we later found out, the place was not reachable by car. One has to take a ferry and than a minibus to get there. As it was already too late to go there we postponed it to the next day and decided to see Smoo Cave and the Sandwood bay instead. Once we reached the cave we took a boat that took us inside the cave. After that we took off direction Sandwood bay in order to reach the Sandwood beach. It is said that it is the most remote beach in the whole of Europe. After seeing it I must admit that it was one of the most amazing places I have ever seen in my life and the best place in Scotland. It was worth the 4 hour walk ;) The next day we took the first ferry to Cape Wrath. The ferry turned out to be a small metal boat that took 10 people at a time. On the way to the lighthouse in Cape Wrath we passed beatiful beaches and we even saw some seals.
After 10 days up north in Scotland the time has come to move south to sunny Madeira in Portugal. It is a small island with high mountains. It gets cloudy in afternoons but it does not matter - you just have to go up above the cloud level to see the blue sky again. :-)
